a few things about line rider

Sun Dec 10, 2006, 9:07 PM
i have a dentist apointment early today so i didnt go to sleep because i would prolly miss it. with this spare time on my hands i decided to tell you guys a few things about line rider:).

i got the idea from one of my drawings i do in my sketch book. the drawing features a big hill drawn with a single line, 3 pine trees and a tiny sledder on the top just about to go down. his hands are raised because of he excitement. i still have it but i currently cant get to it because its stashed somewhere with the rest of my sketches.
anyway i was looking at the thing and i remembered about a thing i used to do in primary school when i was bored. basically i would draw a 2d landscape with jumps clifs and whatnot and then draw another line representing the path of a motocross rider on the the track. and then it hit me 'if it was fun to just imagine this how fun would it be to watch it live'.

i just finished isotype so it seemed like a good project to work on next. and it was pretty clear from the start how it should work. i dint want any scoring because when you add scoring you promote certain types of play and discourage others. i just wanted it to be like i used to do it on paper. totally free. where you decide what happens why it happens and how it happens by simply drawing a line.

i didnt add the line drawing tool on purpose because i wanted it to be a freehand thing so it would involve some skill like any other good toy. i dint want to add the eraser because of the same reason and because i thought it would resemble life more. if you make a mistake its there, if its to big you have to start over.

i never managed to decide what was the story behind line rider. how did the guy get there? how does a person get in a situation where his whole life depends on some other person drawing a line? the best i could think of was this:

hmm, i gues i should give him a name right now:D. ill call him Dude for now, even though its the lamest name:)  (reminds me of big lebovski with his passivenes)

so the dude used to live in a wonderfull world filled with nice slopes of all types where he could sled all day (something like a sledding heaven) but unfortunately, whoever drew that world made a crucial mistake. he didnt use a light fast marker! and because of that, Dudes world slowly but surely faded away.
so now the Dude is without a world and the only one that can save him from the mind numbing white eternity is you! its your mission to give line rider the life you think he deserves. and the only tool you have is a small pen you had in your pocket.

thats it. i would like to give him a better name though. lets see if i can manage to add a forum where you guys can leave suggestions.

//edit///

i did not want to say l will never add the extra tools:)  i just explained why they werent there in the first place.

and i can tell you that the update is coming really soon. for real this time:)

there is a forum thread i made bottom left (you have to be in the journal to see it its not on the main page) where you can leave name sugestions for the Dude

Stay true to what YOU want. Don't worry about what anybody else wants. It's your game, and I for one think it's just the :bomb: just the way it is.

Perhaps you could get inspiration for a Line Rider backstory if you sang "Line Rider" to the tune of "Star Rider" by Foreigner.

I agree with you wanting to keep the concept, but even in real life you have an eraser and a ruler to draw straight lines :)

Just wondering... do you consider those rip-offs of your great game slander, or flattery?

Excellent piece of insight, if it were a piece I would be favouriting it for sure.

So I suppose I will just copy it and save it in word for personal consumption!

dude, i cant wait!! will there still be the landscape tools like you were talking about? and i think an erasor would be great, even though your against it...

o ya, and did you ever play an online game called Punk-o-Matic? it was a (profanity filled) game where you bassically get to make a really rocking song...but anyway, it would give you a code to give to your friends, and they could hear your song. i think using this kind of feature would make this game great, people comparing and building...o man.

anyway, re-consider erasor, and conisder (if you havent) a sharing system.

I used to do that too, only I usually drew a racetrack from above, and then draw the line which represented where/how you were suppossed to drive to get the fastest times.

Anyway, I'm very much looking forward to the update, but don't rush yourself. :)

Thanks for the update, I was starting to get a little worried you'd abandoned the project!

As for a name/background - does it really require one? Leaving it without one has the advantage of allowing the player to make it all up for themselves!

You of course realize that people will still do the click + right click trick to make lines, right? I do, and that's how to make the best possible track.

i think there should be an option after the instructions to choose what skill you are, for example; expert which is the current version and beginner which will include all the erasers n crap.

That was fun to read...
Although I still do use straight lines...
They're good for curving.

To note, when you write about requiring skill, The game would be much easier had I a tablet or even normal mouse as opposed to the touch pad I must use...

I guess it all goes back to your life metaphor,
The playing grounds are hardly level.

to be honest i didnt expect so many people will play with it and didnt think anyone would do it without a mose:).

all the stuff i said ill add is in now so i gues it will be easyer.

im kinda bummed out about leaving the concept behind though:/ it was kinda important to me. i gues thats why i had to tell you guys about it.

Do not let us force your ideas into wasting away.
As an artist you are entitled to present your ideas and emotions without concern of what others think.
It is you as a person that must determine if changes are necessary.

It is a splendid idea,
do not let it be taken away.

thats true. but as time passes and line rider is becoming more and more popular i will have to accept the fact that the whole thing is going in a whole other direction as an idea by itself. it has a life of its own. and who am i to stop it. im sure you know about the meme theory which says ideas can be treated as living beings. if i force my own concepts on it im basically stopping its evolution. its like killing it in its tracks.

i gues its kinda weird that as an author i would feel bad about that but the fact remains, Line Rider is out there and its alive. it doesnt ask me about my opinion, it just evolves.

This is the loss in a popular culture built around customization.
Everyone wants to win, so now they try to adapt the original to their best interests.
Evolution is art.
Do not try to stop it, but allow people to know when your ideas are being compromised.
People care, they will listen.

Wishing you the best of luck,
